Improving Literacy for Kids in Foster Care

Across the Generations, our intergenerational tutoring program for kids who have experienced trauma, is a few steps away from launching in the next school year.

Across the Generations will pair a child who is adopted, or experiencing foster or kinship care, with a grand-mentor tutor to help improve their reading and overall literacy and provide a stable presence in the child’s life. The tutors will receive trauma-informed training so they are well-suited to meet the unique needs of our kids.

We’ll be using Oasis Intergenerational Tutoring model for our program. Oasis was awarded the Generations United 2017 seal of approval based on their success using best practices to promote literacy and benefit children, older adults, schools, and communities.

We’ve received grants from individual donors and foundations yet still have funds to raise. Please make a contribution to Many Lights and help children develop a love of reading, improve their literacy skills, and connect with caring adults.

Your investment in these kids will improve their confidence and self-esteem, academic performance, classroom participation, and attendance. You will help them get on par with their peers and move confidently into middle school and beyond.
