As we head into the new year, Many Lights continues to be a catalyst for creating a purpose-filled multigenerational community model in the Puget Sound region. With Tacoma in sight as our first location, our intention is to help traumatized children heal in the arms of strong, stable families and nurturing communities.
By enhancing supports for foster, kinship, and adoptive families, and engaging elders as mentors and tutors, our model ensures our children will avoid incarceration and homelessness, will have better educational opportunities and outcomes, and that the cycle of abuse and neglect will stop.
Our collaboration with Tacoma Housing Authority continues and we anticipate starting pre-development work with Korean Women’s Association this coming year. The goal is to have a multigenerational community operational by 2022.
Until families move in, we will be seeking out ways to support vulnerable children and families. Our goal is to collaborate with others to effect consequential change and to forge meaningful connections between children and elders. To make direct impact, we are working with corporate partners to host a half-day coding workshop for foster youth. And, we’ll continue to advocate for adoptive families and improved supports as they raise traumatized children.
Next year we plan to launch Across the Generations intergenerational mentoring program for foster and kinship kids in grades K through 4. We’ve already raised 40% of what is needed but need to raise the remaining funds to fully cover program expenses.
We really need your help to launch Across the Generations in 2019!
