|A sense of belonging is a common need and desire we all have throughout our lives. Belonging comes out of stability and connection to others who care about us.|
Children do much better when they have a stable family and a place to call home, go to the same school, grow up with neighborhood friends and classmates, and have the love and adoration of a much older friend like a grandparent or mentor. Belonging is especially important for a child who has experienced trauma and foster care so they may grow and thrive.
When parents have friends and neighbors surrounding them, they feel they are not alone, they take comfort that others understand their journey and are simply there to help if it’s needed. Belonging helps support parents who are raising children with needs greater than others.
Older adults feel secure and less lonely when they know there is someone close by to count on and when younger friends value their wisdom and time. Belonging helps keep older adults active and engaged avoiding loneliness.
Belonging is what connection is all about, what community is all about, and sometimes, we must create it for ourselves or others. This is exactly what Many Lights is working to do!
We are focused on building the community and connections that provide a sense of belonging for children in foster and kinship care as well as for parents and older adults in our community.
We need your help to create this place of belonging for all generations. Ways you can help right now are to do your holiday shopping at AmazonSmile, make an additional year end donation, and put Many Lights on your wishlist. Ask family and friends to make a gift in your honor and in support of your community — a place where everyone belongs.
